Start Your Own Mobile Fleet Detailing Business: Start From Scratch or Buy A Franchise
My name is Stefan Gautron. I’m the CEO of Starfleet Detailing, and what I’m going to be talking about today are the advantages and disadvantages of starting your own business from scratch versus a franchise.
Can you start by explaining your journey in the detailing industry and why you chose to start your business from scratch?
I myself didn’t start my business from scratch. I took over this business in 2020. It was already an operating business, but it was having its issues. I had to get out of construction, and I was looking for something that would be more of a management position. So I bought the business, and unfortunately it didn’t go well from the start because COVID started. That brought its own challenges, putting us into high alert and forcing us to try to overcome a lot of obstacles. It was quite the learning curve, and we learned a lot from those three years of COVID.
What are the main advantages of starting your own detailing business from scratch compared to franchising?
We decided to franchise our business about a year ago because of the challenges that detailers, in general, have when starting their own business. It’s almost set up for failure because most detailers have experience detailing but no experience running a business, marketing themselves, or even choosing a good name to stand out from the competition.
Franchising, we felt, was a solution to help detailers make it as entrepreneurs. We noticed that our employees often dreamed of starting their own business, having a shop, but the ones we encountered had tried and failed. We realized franchising could meet a need and help detailers out.
Also, as a result of COVID, more and more businesses were going mobile. Detailing as a mobile business was ripe for growth, and that’s why we decided to launch this franchise.
Can you discuss some of the challenges you faced when starting your own detailing business from scratch that could have been avoided with franchising?
The challenges of starting a business from scratch are numerous. You have to think of a name that makes you stand out, reflects what you do, and sets you apart from the competition. Without proper guidance, it can be disastrous.
For example, most detailers only rely on liability insurance, which is not enough. They might use a personal vehicle for business, which can cause insurance issues if the company finds out it’s not insured as a business vehicle. Then there’s building a website, marketing yourself, tracking expenses, invoicing, using Google My Business, and advertising. The list of things that can go wrong without proper structure is limitless.
A franchise addresses most of these problems from the start. You can focus on doing your work and building your brand without having to figure out everything on your own.
What level of control and creativity does starting your own detailing business offer compared to operating a franchise?
If you’re building your own brand from scratch, you pick your own name, create your own logo, and that can be personally satisfying. However, if you have no knowledge of branding, it can work against you.
A franchise comes with a built-in brand, which helps you get customers right away. There’s already brand recognition and a reputation, which makes it easier to close deals. If you approach a company as “Joe’s Detailing,” they might see you as a one-man show who might not meet their safety or quality expectations. But if you come in with a recognized franchise brand, they trust you more from the start. This trust makes it easier to negotiate and land contracts.
How does the initial investment and ongoing cost compare between starting your own detailing business from scratch and buying a franchise?
Starting from scratch often means any money you make has to be reinvested into the business. It can take several years to build your brand and business. Buying a franchise, on the other hand, lets you focus on acquiring customers and doing good work right from the start. You’re spending your energy on one or two things instead of wearing many hats at once.
Without the franchise structure, you might end up working 12-hour days just trying to keep everything running. A franchise can help set you up for success more efficiently.
What kind of support and resources can entrepreneurs expect when they buy a franchise that they might not get when starting their own business?
With a franchise like ours, you get the brand, organization, and someone to answer your questions. We help set you up legally, and you’re only a phone call away from getting assistance. That’s priceless. If you run into a jam, Google doesn’t always have the answer, but your franchise support team does. This lets you move ahead with confidence.
What advantages in brand recognition do you get when you buy a franchise compared to starting your own business?
Customer acquisition relies heavily on trust. Customers want to know you can handle their high-value assets without causing damage. Brand recognition makes it easier to earn that trust. If you have a known brand, even if it’s not perfect, customers trust you more than someone who just started out.
With a franchise, you can open doors more quickly and get to making money faster. If you do it on your own, it’s harder to build trust. You might just end up lowering prices and competing at the bottom, where you barely make more than a regular job would pay.
What are some key considerations detailing professionals should keep in mind when deciding between starting their own business and buying a franchise?
One big challenge of buying a franchise is the cost. Start-up costs are higher. Most franchises start around $30,000 and up, depending on equipment, vans, and whether you want a shop. If you choose a mobile model, you still need a van and equipment.
Starting on your own might be cheaper at the outset, but your return is lower, and it can take a long time to establish yourself. Meanwhile, competition is fierce, and discouragement sets in fast. Many people end up quitting because they aren’t equipped with the right tools for success. A franchise provides those tools and can improve your odds of making it in the detailing world.
Can you share any success stories that highlight the difference between the two paths?
I’ve come across a few success stories of independent detailers who have been in it for 10 or 20 years, have built a brand, and do well. But for every one of those, there are dozens of failures.
If you search Google, the list of detailing companies changes every year because many fail. Lack of proper marketing know-how forces them to lower prices until it’s not worth running their own business. Many would be better off just working for a detail shop.
Franchising can change that. Most successful, recognizable businesses today are franchises. A well-structured franchise can give you the support you need to succeed where many others fail.
Looking to the future, how do you see the detailing industry evolving, and do you think starting from scratch or buying a franchise is more beneficial for new entrepreneurs?
I think the future is franchising for most companies, especially in competitive fields like detailing. Unless you have a unique skill set that sets you apart—like custom artwork on cars—the competition is fierce.
If detailing is your passion and you want to build it up, franchising is the way to go. Most successful businesses are franchises now. They dominate the market because there’s a larger pool of funds for marketing, something you won’t have as an individual.
